Historically, the service of acolytes, as a minor order, dates back to the year 252. An acolyte assists in worship through a variety of functions such as carrying the processional cross, lighting and extinguishing the candles, holding the Book of Gospels during the reading of the Gospel, carrying candles and/or banners in procession, assisting the priest and deacon at the altar, and functioning as a thurifer during more festive services. The service of Acolyte is open to any gender, youth and adult, who have a desire to participate and be more involved in worship.
Empowered by the Holy Spirit, our vision as Daughters of the King® is to know Jesus Christ, to make Him known to others, and to become reflections of God’s love throughout the world.
Women of St. Andrew's:
Altar Guild: Volunteer teams of the parish whose ministry is to care for the altar, vessels, and altar linens of the parish. Altar Guild members prepare the sanctuary for services, and clean up afterwards. Altar Guild members frequently supervise the decoration of the sanctuary of the parish with flowers.
Choir: St. Andrew's choir enriches the worshiping experience. The choir is comprised of volunteer singers. We sing each Sunday (Sept - May) at the 9:00 a.m. service. The choir also takes part in special liturgies during the year and sponsor a community choir for the Annual Advent Lessons and Carols. Rehearsals are held regularly on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. Our choir director warmly welcomes joyful voices.
Greeters: All members of St. Andrew's are to consider themselves as greeters. Greeting visitors and new comers is a Christian responsibility of welcoming all to St. Andrew's.
Lay Eucharistic Minister (LEM): Is a person that usually vests for the service and assists in the distribution of Communion. A LEM receives training and is licensed by the bishop to administer the consecrated bread and wine in the absence of a sufficient number of priests and deacons.
Lay Eucharistic Visitor: Is a person licensed by the bishop to take consecrated bread and wine to shut-ins. There is a condensed service with prayers, a reading (usually from the Gospel), and administering the sacraments of bread and wine.
Lay Reader: Is a person that reads the Old Testament, leads the Psalm, and reads the New Testament lessons appointed for service. A Lay Eucharistic Minister (LEM) often reads the appointed lessons and is vested here at St. Andrew’s. However, a Lay Reader does not have to be vested or a licensed LEM. A reader may come up from the congregation to read (this is the standard practice in the church today). If you would like to become a Lay Reader please make an appointment with the priest to discuss your calling and receive instruction.
Ushers: An usher is ready to assist anyone needing assistance in seating or finding their way in the church. The usher counts the number of people in the congregation, collect and present the offerings at the offertory, and assist the congregation during the administration of communion.
